IF YOU FART IN YOUR SLEEP AND NO ONE IS THERE... DID YOU REALLY FART?

The sound vibrations are detected in the ear, changed to electrical signals and transmitted by the nerves to the brain where they are processed and recorded. If no human ears are around to listen to the sound, the sound as we know it cease to exists.

The energy waves created by the tree crashing to the ground vibrate your eardrum just inside your ear. That send waves through a fluid inside a narrow tube called the cochlea, which in turn vibrates tiny hairs which are tuned to the different pitches of the sound. Information from the vibration of the hairs stimulates nerves which send the signals to the brain for processing.

To conclude, if no humans are around, no, there are no sound, the way you and I know it. But yes, the energy wave is there, and you can measure it with a machine in units of decibals. This energy wave has not been 'transformed' to sound by our ears and brains yet.

Waves are created in the air. Sound only occurs when it reaches ones ear. YES, a forest animal or bird hears it.

NO!

Sound is a human concept that requires rational thought to be recognised and understood. Without understanding the tree just falls. What we would recognise as sound just is.

Ommm...
