Here are some ways to search for someone:
1) Do a white pages search (or http://www.zaba.com ) on the name, and call any and all names that come up, tell them you are doing genealogy research, and did they ever live in such and such place (where ever s/he lived at some time). If the answer is no, go on to the next name. If the answer is yes, ask a few other leading questions.
2) If you know where he was at a certain period of time, or where s/he came from, you can go back to high school yearbooks, property records, etc, and compile as much info as you can.
3) You can call people with the same last name who live in or around areas s/he has lived and again saying you are doing genealogy research, ask if s/he is a relative, and go from there with whatever info you get.
4) Pay one of the people search websites to get all the info you can in one place ... it may be worth the cost ... they have access to places easier than you do because that is what they do. Make sure it is a reputable one.
5) Post on various genealogy and people-search forums, and someone/s may offer to help you with your search.
