Something that is quintessentially from your own country - eg, tea and biscuits from Brit, whiskey, Belgian chocolate, salami. maybe they are into football -posters of favourite players, smokers like foreign brands of cigarettes, anything with Harrods on it.

Having lived in japan for 8 years... I find that many Japanese appreciate ethnic or "original goods" as often stated over here. Be sure you have the story behind it and in detail. Japanese tend to be foreign-o-philes and really appreciate uniqueness - in food, literature, art - The Oomiyage "o mi yah geh" is a cherished event when someone comes from or returns from a trip - and it is always a local item. And like some others have stated the packaging is well considered. and layered.. please tell us where you are from in the EU if you want some additional help.... if you are from the Br Isles some Cd's of British music would be great!!!

As one of Japanese, if I were to get some presents from European people, things that make me feel very European-like would be nice. Historical things, some posters or photos of European landscapes, and stuff. I don't think food is very good, for we can get food all over the world in Korea and Japan. Brand bags or accessories such as Chanel and Fendy are not really pleased because it's so common that they won't get pleased in my opinion. What about flags or handkerchiefs of the national flag of your country?

As I have visited lots of Japanese and welcomed into their houses..most I have seen are these decorations from other countries which they visited too or something that has given to them by friends. As most of them are getting practical, small items are much more favored like handmade stuffs,or arts that could be display ..if women mostly they prefer small souvenirs,,ballpens, chains, etc for men who does smoke, cigarettes ...imported.. for small children.. cute stuffs even a t-shirt with logo is a good pick.. for teens.... something that is cute(again) and unusual from your country.. giving expensive ones are not really recommendable because they have lots more expensive that they can buy their own.. if you give one..be sure others can share with these* stuffs* it is like sharing something for everyone.. even a sets of good ballpen will do..In Tokyo Disneyland,, they go to
the souvenir sections... lots of small goodies.. they like sharing with somebody whatever it is , small things is something to consider.. Koreans is also fond of souvenirs,, they have many unique and good souvenir items of their own.. they are not much different to Japanese.. there is a so called $$ shops in Japan and this are fav spots for them.. as they are very practical too you could get an idea..... because they are creative.. cheap or expensive..does not matter
hope this helps.

For Japan, I'd suggest fresh fruit. Beause they have less land to grow on, most fruit is really expensive there. Try bringing some apples (they go for about a dollar each in Japan!) or some watermelon.

My Japanese friend like to give self made item, like self design postcard with family, photo frame from patch work, pouches and things that is from their prefecture. You should get something that represent where you come from and originated from your country. Do not buy something "Made In Korea or Japan". It will be quite silly. It would be great to get them local specialty for it will not be available in their countries and promote your beautiful country as well.

Anything you give to someone in Japan, make sure it is wrapped up very elegantly. Presentation is half the thing that makes gifts special. Also, are you expecting them to give you a gift? If you give them a gift and they do not have on for you, they may be embarrassed.

Food from their culture should go down well. We've got to be safe with that. Or if you want to spend more cash then something electronic that's made in Japan should be fine.
