British Empire: 36.6 million km²

Mongolian Empire: 33.2 million km²

1. The Mongol Empire. For a time, it encompassed more area than any other empire.

2. The Roman Empire. For centuries it expanded and showed continuity. It didn't begin to contract until shortly before its fall.
