Not at all
As soon as you start to restrict things it looks as though you have something to hide. There is also an element that governments might not actually trust us enough to have all of the information and make an informed chioce about things. And it's that choice that makes US dangerous (not the U.S. of A. (although there are some in government there who are very very dangerous but that's another matter)) but us the people, dangerous.
China is concerned with their grip on their citizens but probably no more than Britain, America or many other countries are. Their ability to police what is seen as an unregulated system and therefore a way of breaking their power base and hold over people is very very important to them. And it is that element of control that they seek.
Tim Berners-Lee (the guy who is credited with developing the web back in 1989) has warned of the dangers of a two tier internet that will charge for different levels of information as it limit the amount of open information that is available. This is not a view supported by some American telecom companies who want to charge users for information and access to some fairly standard sites. These are the people who the interent has to be protected from as their ability to finance and 'persude' governements to thier point of view is potentially the most damaging.
As far as I'm concerned governements are the least of our problems

No, definitely not. Yes, "bad" sites do exist, but there are also "bad books" or, lets say, "bad food". What we eat is our own choice and responsibility. The same goes for what we read, the movies we watch and the things we believe in. Limiting the information flow leads to a classic case of brainwashing. Parents should be able to limit the information kids can access - parents are responsible for educating and protecting their kids. However, no information should be restricted by governments, or we'll end up with years of mass delusions, such as "totalitarian communism" for instance.

In a larger sense, they can't. Look at China. They try diligiently to restrict what their people access on the web, but the Chinese constantly get around that. There are always ways. No government in the world can regulate madness or freedom. They can merely try to contain them.

Hello muffin.I dont think a government should restrict what we access on the internet.Public information that is.I think that government censure must be because of the sensitive nature of that information.Being that every government has enemies they may decide to censure sites that divulge military plans or communications. That I can understand. But neutral information would be beyond my understanding as to the need for censure. Thanks for your time, good day!

I would have said a resounding no...but some of the pornography really needs to be removed from the net and prosecutions made. I'm talking about the illegal stuff concerning minors, or the sick stuff concerning adults. They just use the web as the laws are not the same. Hopefully they will be one day tho....

Sites are retricted by themselves with terms of use and register log ins and passwords and government doesn't track down illegal activity such as music piracy but what i call the big fish that is credit card hi-jackers and hackers that break into bank systems.......
If we should go to jail for any illegal activity online ....1/3 of the earth population would be in jail by now

Every freedom is regulated. Thus, the government could make restrictions. It is the reason why that there are sites that require age warnings and passwords.

absolutely not. If the people give up that freedom whats next? Censorship of the press? Censorship in any form is just another way for a government to control its people. I don't know about you but I don't like being controlled.

Not my government. When we decide that acting like Iran or China is a good idea, I'll be checking out the immigration requirements for Australia.
