Try to find some updated drivers of your modem by looking for the brand and model numbers and using them on the manufacturers site. They may have updated XP drivers. WinXP should have supplied correct drivers as well unless your brand is an obscure one. Anyway look on Yahoo search to find it. Good luck!

while upgrading from win9x to windows XP it will tell you while installing that some devices may not work unless and until the products are authenticated to Windows XP. you need to contact the dealer or the manufacturer to tell the problem. Or buy a modem card verifing that is it compatable for WindowsXP.(you will find the(for win9X/win2000/winXP)then only you buy.

Because most of the manufactures taking Digital verification certificate from Microsofts new operating system otherwise the device drivers dont work.
Other than Widows XP your device will work in any O.S.

upgrading in the sense you have to upgrade the drivers too for ur hardware from 98 to winxp but it will happens automatically if the hardware is a genuine one, otherwise u have to find a new driver which shud be compatible for winxp, before installing a new driver uninstall the old one, which in the case it dont have to conflict with each other.

As mr.Rowday said that your driver may be too old thats why in xp there is no such a list of driver found. search you driver from yahoo or google it 'll be better for you and u'll find better response.
