Because it's gauranteed not to shrink by the australian wool board (u will find this label attached just below a sheeps b*m).
It shrinks in the washing machine because the gaurantee would have runout by the time u bought the article of woolen clothing.

Still attached to the sheep and growing, plus contains natural oils, removed when the fleece is turned into woollen products. Plus rain not as hot as 40 degrees! Woollens can be washed without shrinking in cooler water.

The raw wool has an oil coating. It was once called LAMB-O-LIN but somehow people got it mixed up and is now called LANOLIN.
If you put Lamb-o-lin on your hair it will have the opposite effect and your head will shrink up and make you feel sheepish for days.

For the same reason your hair doesn't shrink. Wool knits don't shrink when you wash them in a machine, but all that tumbling around will stretch them out and make them lose their shape.

There is a very heavy oil base in it called -i believe-lanolin.
the protective oils are removed when the wool is processed.
