Lavender and Apple & Cinnamon (depends on how sharp a scent you want to go for) are classic, I think. I also rather like hyacinth. And Lilly of the Valey... oh, come to think about it, I like a lot of scented candles... and rather than going to a place to get them, I keep a lookout for those wherever I go.

Depends where you are and how much you want to spend. Here are some recommendations for the UK:
Cheaper - Marks and Spencer are currently doing a really nice range, I have their pear scented one which comes in a really lovely glass jar and smells really fresh and gorgeous.
More expensive - the Diptyque range are lovely and I know that SpaceNK in the UK stock them. Also Jo Malone candles are very good - search online for stockists.
Really lovely (but rather expensive) - if it is for a special gift then Penhaligon's candles are gorgeous and come in all the perfumes they sell - you can by lovely glass and silver holders that come with them and into which you can put new candles as they run out.

Yankee candles, not the cheapest, but the scent will fill the room, unlike cheap candles which smell only when you hold them to your nose. QVC shopping channel and web site sells them. Or get friends to buy them if they visit the States!
Depends on the mood you want to create, lavender is a good all rounder. Cinnamon or the spicy ones for a more romantic evening.

Your nose can tell you what smells good and the level of preference differs between people but a general scent that people like is lavender. It's calming. I'm sure you can get it at your convenience store for a couple of bucks, like at Walgreen's. Vanilla and almond scents are also very popular and can be sexually arousing. I also love coconut. These may be less likely found at your convenience store, but you can probably find them at a body or skin or beauty store, middle eastern stores, cultural stores, stores in malls: Bath & Body Works, The Body Shop, Cost Plus.
If you can't find 'em, you could make your own by melting wax with a scented oil. Don't melt crayons though because they smell funky.

Yankee candles are lovely and they don't cost much money! most shops that sell candles sell these and they come in a huge range of scents.
My faves are tropical vanilla, chocolate chip cookie and lemon zest. Hope this helps, also i have recently brought some nice tea lights from Hobbycraft which cost about two pounds for nine and they had some really nice fresh smells like passion flower and also a nice lemon smelling one! best of all try the strawberry! i cant remember the brand name of them sorry! Hope this helps!

mmm. I love the fresh smelling candles such as Summer Rain, Clean Cotton, and some of the fruit smells. I was never big on the cinnamon candles etc. I just love the clean smelling and rejuvinating ones. On the internet, im not sure. If worse comes to worse, check ebay-lol, but they should have some nice smelling candles at Kmart and such.

I love Vanilla, it smells wonderful and it helps cover oders.
Apple/Cinnamon or just Cinnamon kinda spicy, but sweet.
I don't know if they are in your area, but the "Everythings a Dollar" is always good for buying candles.
