I have a ceiling fan that makes a small humming noise while it is on. I heard you can oil them, but I do not know how. Do I need to take them apart? Is it better to replace the fan instead?

Unless it's an old (and I mean really old) fan there are sealed bearings in the fan. Most likely it is from wear and debris in the armature. Try blowing out the fan motor. You can get compressed air at any office supply store (it's for computer keyboards) a buildup of dust can cause the hum. If that doesn't work about all you can do is replace the fan.

most fans used sealed bearings and therefore do not need to be lubricated. you can use a little machine oil on it which may stop the humming temporarily, but eventually the bearings wear out. some of the new fans are using teflon bearings now which last for years and generate little friction. ceiling fans are cheap now compared to ten years ago. replace it if you so desire???

Ceiling fans shouldn't be oiled.
The humming noise is normal.

This is probably the noise of the blades cutting through the air, tha faster the fan spins, the louder the humming noise.

If its wobbling though, the holding screws may need tightening........
