Well, tobacco has been smoked for hundreds of years on the American continent.
I don't know if other plants were smoked elsewhere in the world in earlier days - haven't ever heard about in Europe, but maybe in Asia.

Early American Indians used all the grasses in the terrain for pipe smoking. It was the duty of the young male to find savory grasses for smoking rituals. It was believed to prevent the speaker from using a forked tongue. Those that had tobacco grew it as they traveled.
