i do not know whether squash players use different balls for practice or competion

I believe that people at the top of their game may even use very slow (double yellow spot) as you have to really hit them to get them moving, and they can take a lot of thrashing. Me and an old squash partner used them regularly and always found they gave us the best, most competetive and most exhausting game.

I would recommend starting out with a fast ball if you're a beginner then working up through medium to the slowest ball.

I imagine professionals have personal favourites and my well use different speed balls for practice and competition, but I'd say the slower the ball, the better you have to be to play with it.
