From the Eighth century forward, the Semitic peoples (Jews and Arabs) lived together in relative harmony. Some of the finest minds of the time came from this group of people. They contributed greatly in the sciences (metallurgy, optics, math, astronomy). Algebra is an arabic term. Then somewhere along the way, things broke down, and we have this archaic 7th century barbarism that calls for wholesale slaughter of people who don't belive like you do. (ref: Europe during the Inquisition).
