If you put a plant (aloe) in a clay pot do you need drainage holes or does the clay absorb the water

it does both. it does absorb some water but you will need some sort of drainage or the roots will rot. you have 2 choices drill some holes in bottom( put masking tape on both sides of pot where you want to make hole or it will crack and chip) if this is not an option then make sure to put at least an inch or two of gravel in bottom of pot so the soil is not constantly wet.

Yes, clay will absorb a very small amount of water, but drainage is always a good thing. It allows the soluble salts to move out of the soil. After a while the if there is no drainage the salts will gather on the side of the pot (white film/residue) and that is why many people don't use un-glazed pots because it looks kinda ugly. If you don't over water your plant you can get a few years out of a plant in a clay pot with no drainage. Clay also allows air flow, though not much. I've been working with tropical house plants for awhile and I haven't had a hard time with spores on the outside if the pot. Hope that helps you some. Good luck!

You shouldnt be using a clay pot indoors anyway.

Clay pots are porous--not enough to wick away excess water, but enough to be damp after watering. If you're using a pot thats not glazed, over time mold and mildew will develop on the outside of a properly-watered pot. Its just a fact of life; there are mold spores in the air, and they love a moist spot thats out of direct sunlight and warm.

When using pottery for houseplants always try to get ones that are only glazed on the outside.

No matter what type of pot you use (plastic or pottery) you certainly need drainage holes in the bottom. Its an escape route for the excess water, because if it doesnt have anywhere to go, the roots will begin to rot from constantly being soaked.

regardless of whether the pot is clay or porcelain, drainage holes are necessary for potted plants.
clay pots tend to allow oxygen into the soil more readily and some water does dissipate through the clay, but not enough to replace drain holes.
aloe plants are succulents, it is very easy to over-water them and start root rot.
always water it thoroughly and let it get somewhat dry between waterings.
