Anorexia nervosa is an illness that usually occurs in teenage girls, but it can also occur in teenage boys, and adult women and men. People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin. They lose a lot of weight and are terrified of gaining weight. They believe they are fat even though they are very thin. Anorexia isn't just a problem with food or weight. It's an attempt to use food and weight to deal with emotional problems.

I had a friend who had just that problem in high school (still does, but at least now she eats once in awhile). She had a very messed up home life, an alcoholic father and a clinically depressed mother, and a drug addict brother, and she was the quiet, passive one who got walked all over constantly. She had a poor self-image in general and she told me years later that she felt it was the only thing in her life that she actually had any control of - whether or not she ate, and if so, how much.
For other people, it might be different, but for many, it seems like a way to control your own life when it seems you have no control over anything else.
We also live in a society where we are told that the only way to have self worth is to be thin and gorgeous. I'm sure that messes alot of people up too!

when i was 18-24 i went down to 6 stone.before this i was about 8 stone my brothers and other people would say that i had fat legs( i did gym and lots of sports so my legs were strong and muscular)
I thought that i looked good at 6 stone,i had a very flat stomach, you could see my muscles and ribs and hip bones i had small breasts. My cheekbones were very defined and my eyes looked big.(I did not think that i looked fat-thats something else-body dysmorphia.)
This look was very cool at the time.
i had a buzz from the self -control and the hunger pains i felt.( they were similar to the pains of being in love.)
20 years later i am 2 and a half stone heavier and looking back at the photos i realise how skinny and unattractive i looked.
I like me now.
Thats the difference .i didnt like myself so i tried to change the way i looked .
its not weird but quite logical.
I have a happy life now ,kids, husband, career but sometimes i look at my body and wish i was thinner.i just dont have the time for the self-obsession !!
I hope that this sheds some light on the mind of the anorexic.in a non-medical way!!!!!!!!

This is a question that is difficult to answer without hurting those who are trying to turn their lives around from this problem. It is a problem with the way the person looks at themselves in the mirror. Where you and I see skin and bones they see fat in there face and hips and stomach. The only way to get help is to go into a program or therapy with a qualified doctor. If you know someone please try and help them because this can lead to death if not treated.

A little thing called body image, everyone has an ideal image of ourselves, looking in the mirror we all have something we don't like about ourselves and how we think we should look to other people, sometimes it's a tall order to live up ro ourselves, not wierd just societies demands on what is, or isnt normal!
A sad reflection on the human condition i'm afraid!

because its in their mind. the reason they go anorexic in the first place isnt just because of the weay they look, its because they arent mentally stable, they have physcological issues and these need to be sorted out in order for them to regain a 'normal' healthy weight. i knew someone who went anorexic and she also nearly developed OCD, she became obsessed with having evrything clean and thats why she wouldnt eat, because the food wasnt clean enough or the plate wasnt clean enough etc. anorexia is a mental illness, not justa physical one.

It's a mental disorder, not just physical. They see a distorted picture of themselves which causes them to react in such a way that the skeletal image, in their eyes, looks good.

Anorexia is a psychological disorder - its all in their heads. Its weird because we're not the ones dealing with it. To them its perfectly normal.
