According to the book "The Human Story",an american ship sailed into edo, threatening to deliver "with force" the trade message if the japanese didn't accept it peacefully. The ship then said the americans would return in a year with a larger force for an answer. Was America really planning on attacking if the japanese didn't agree to trade?

The Japanese wanted American steel and oil for their war machine. The Americans were aware of the devastation being brought upon China. They decided to quell the oil and steel shipments the same day the Flying Tigers started making a lot of bad days for the Japanese. There is a smidgeon of evidence that Roosevelt may have known about the Japanese plan to attack us; they did not know where.

It is odd that the Roosevelt speech was a work of art. It would be safe to assume that he had this speech prepared well in advance. Roosevelt needed to be attacked; this would sensationalize the declaration of war.

Yes , your talking about Admiral Perry and his black ships. This show of force woke Japan up to technology. They then traded especially with the dutch. Then this lead to the Meji rebellion wherein the Tokugawa shogunate was overthrown and modern Japan was born.
