WOW!!!!!!!!!! great question....
Paul Newman
Marlon Brando
John Wayne
Tom Hanks
It's hard to decide, all are great in the different roles that they have portrayed.
Ya know who I think would have REALLY GOOD if he had not died would have been James Dean. He only made three films, but all three were very good.

Best does not belong to one person. The craft of acting is evolving all the time, but most of today's actors seem too self-involved to be great. The golden age of Hollywood produced many great American actors such as:
Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn,
Gregory Peck, Bette Davis
Jimmy Stewart, Carole Lombard
Henry Fonda, etc.

Anthony Hopkins (true, he was originally from Wales, but he's ours now!). Why? Greatness needs no explanation, but I'll indulge you:
1. Remains of the Day (master of restraint in his scene with Emma Thompson)
2. The Bounty (his freak out scene with Mel Gibson when they are screaming in each other's faces- you can see the veins on their necks bulging)
3. Legends of the Fall (how many people do you know who can cry out of only one eye and fake paralysis on one side of their body?)
4. Zorro (Charm...)
5. Hanibal Lechter (the uncanny ability to not blink- and to make that cool noise with his tongue and teeth)
6. Meet Joe Black (great father figure and one of the few men who don't look bad standing next to Brad Pitt)
7. His extensive Shakesperean work.
In short: Range, skill, finesse....greatness! Plus, I think he's sexy!

Kevin Spacey.
He can do anything - comedy, sci-fi, drama, & so on. Too bad he's in London running the Old Vic. Someday we may get him back.
