A network interface card (NIC) is a computer circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network. Personal computers and workstations on a local area network (LAN) typically contain a network interface card specifically designed for the LAN transmission technology, such as Ethernet. Network interface cards provide a dedicated, full-time connection to a network.

NIC - stands for Network Interface Card, also commonly called Network Adapter.

It is a printed circuit board that plugs into the bus of both user machines (clients) and servers in a local area network (LAN). The adapters are wired to a network hub, switch or router, typically using twisted wire pair cables, although optical fibers may be used for very fast connections. In the case of a single home computer, the network adapter is often wired to a router, which is connected to or includes a DSL or cable modem for Internet access.

The network adapter controls the transmission and receiving of data at the data link level (layers 1 and 2 of the OSI model).

If someone asks you what your "nic" is they are not referring to what network interface card you are using. They are asking for your User ID or name.
