I think given enough time it is possible. I think the basic structure could work similarly to the systems we already have in place with a global government being the highest power but not all powerful.
City -> State -> Nation -> Continent -> Globe

Somthing we all could unite agienst that threated us as a race otherwise you'll be hard pressed since there are annoying things like religon that would get in the way, not to mention money grubbing polictions as well as the leaders of said unione attempt to get more power.
No I think we would need a out side menace to unite us all. that or another war that wipes most of us out and forces the survicers togeather.

The best solution is no world union. Damn new world order types are all over this web. Save it for your illuminati, bildeberg, skull and bones buddies while you dance with the devil in the pale moonlight.

Well right now both global capitalism and global communism are still trying to do that. It'll probably be whatever comes afterwards, if there's anything left of us after these two ideologies run their courses.

It would be lovely, but it'll never happen. The powers that be want to ensure that they have more than enough while whole countries go without. It's a power thing.
