i am doing a lot of research on many universities and i keep coming up with the phrase 'independent comprehensive' when i look for basic information on the universites like reed college, university of puget sound, and lewis and clark college. i want to know if this has anything to do with any religious affiliation.

I think it has something to do with independant study - that is, more work outside of the classroom, alone, than in it. Maybe?
