I just put a load of laundry in (12:48am...can't sleep...) and I got to thinking.

I don't separate my clothes. I just throw in whatever I grab. I've never had a problem with bleeding *knocks on wood* or anything.

Do you separate? If so, by what? Colors, texture, temps of water (I just keep mine on warm/cold).

Naturally, after I say that nothing bad has ever happened, my two fave shirts get ruined.

Nice going zoer. freakin' loser...

I must be picky about my clothes,,everything gets separated and its own temperature of water, and its own detergent,,whites get detergent and bleach, darks get detergent and pinesole for odors and tough stains, and lights get detergent only, and everything gets fabric softner, and the real good clothes hang to dry,,we own a roofing and remodeling business so clothes get filthy and stinky..and alot of times i let the loads soak for a little while....this also gets them cleaner...

I'm in the same boat as you in both cases on not sleeping (I live in Seattle...we must be in the same times zone) and seperating. I don't seperate at all if I have a small load and I've never had bleeding. I usually make sure to wash on cold though if there is a lot of darks or reds in the load. When I have a large load to do I seperate and wash the whites with hot and the darks with cold.

1 Put all your clothes in one big pile 2 First take all of your white clothes to one side. This include striped things as long as the stripes are a light or pastel color, if they are bright keep them in the main pile. You will wash these in warm water and can add bleach if all of the clothes are completely white. 3 Then take your darks to another side. This includes jeans, sweats, and all other clothes that do not need to be washed with care. This pile will be washed in cold water. 4 Then take your brights. This would be yellows, greens, oranges, bright blues, etc. These should be washed on their own the first couple times to avoid bleeding. If your reds have been washed a few times they can be put in this load, but do so with care. Wash this in cold water. 5 Next take your reds and bright pinks and make this another load. Wash this in cold water. 6 What is left should be your delicates. These can be put all in one load unless a color is at risk for bleeding. Wash them on the delicate cycle in cold water.

I put white "personal" items - underwear, t shirts, jocks, etc. in one wash on hot with a small amount of bleach. I separate everything else into two loads with warm water, one with lighter colored items and the other with darker colored items. Unless I don't have much laundry, then I just do one load of whites and another of everything else but only with cold water. If I have something new that is a color likely to bleed, I will wash it by itself the first time. Dress shirts get dropped off at laundry, and delivered to my doorman. Prior to living in an apartment building with machines in the basement, I dropped everything off at the laundromat. A very common thing in New York to just drop everything off and pick it up the next day or have it delivered to my apartment. If I don't have much time, I will still occasionally drop everything off.

It depends...

I always wash at 40 degrees and only seperate if there is more than one wash and there is a good mix of light and dark. If there is only enough for one wash and I know the darks don't run, then I will put them all in together. I always wash new dark coloured stuff by hand for the first couple of washes anyway....basically so I can find out if they run or not...

I couldn't sleep much last night either....just too warm...it's now 9am here in the UK...waiting for the joiners to arrive!

The only thing I ever separate is white clothes , like socks that may need bleach, other than that, I am laundry illiterate. And I have a confession.. I have NO idea how to iron.

I do separate mine. Darks (dark blues, blacks, jeans) Whites (with bleach), and Lights (pinks, purples, light blues) Lights (tans, greys) and I wash on warm/cold except whites on hot. I have had clothes bleed before so I just don't take the chance now.

I sure do...
blacks (I have so many black clothing I have to run 2 loads just for this color!)
jeans and towels
reds
browns, tans, greens and blues
brighter colors yellow, peach, etc
and last
white!
Hot shrinks your clothes,so hubby likes things washed in cold. I really don't care, and i throw EVERYTHING in the dryer!

Yes. I separate by colors. Those brand new clothes washed for the first time I never mix them with old clothes to wash.
