At the lower levels, there is a definite point to getting points. Each level has its own daily limit as to how many questions you can ask and answer and how many times you can vote and rate. If you run into these limits, you'll have to answer, vote and rate daily to earn enough points to get to the next level.
There's also a downloadable wallpaper on your "My Q&A" page at level two and up, but there aren't any prizes other than that. A lot of people do find that the points make participating more fun, though, and love the competition.
After level five, the number of questions you can ask and answer is unlimited, so there's really nothing else you can get after that. There are a lot of people who stick around, though, because it's fun answering questions, learning new things and making a few new friends.

At first it was for the points now its for fun.
I like answering questions; it is a side effect from watching Jeopardy and much faster.
I been around the block a few times and know a bit about many things.
I like helping people who have serious questions with a serious answer.
I like razzing people who post facetious questions.
And it helps me keep current. I learn something new everyday.

You just collect the points.
It decides how many questions/answers you are allowed.
It's also a useful tracking device for the folks at Yahoo to guage popularity, check trends, etc.

The only point is to get points. I think it's an ego thing.

...Yes, you can win a few friends plus a lot of enemies (!), when you get 'a lot of points' !
...And haven't you heard of the old adage, that 'Nothing ever happens, unless and until someone makes it happen' ?!
:-))

POINTS...lol...Actually I would think the POINT is to have a place where one can get answers...And where one can share knowledge, opinions, experience, etc....
