Sounds like your child already has strong mental ability. Maybe he finds it difficult to read or write (known as dyslexia). If so, this means he IS intelligent, just that he has problems with reading & writing. Find other ways for him to express his intelligence eg by talking, playing, drawing, through music etc. And try to help him understand reading/writing but slowly and one step at a time.

I know here in the states, parents read to their kids, work with them on their handwriting and learning of new words. I don't know if it is the same in Nigeria, but it would seem if you were to interact with your son, he might be able to progress further. Where SHOULD he be? What primary? As for his mate, is she the same age? Some people can speak intelligently and ask in depth questions, but then to try and put them down onto paper, that can be tough. Personally, I would rather write than ever have to do a speech.
Hope that is of some help.

Einstein was a very poor student, and a late bloomer. Don't push it, but do take time to read to him regularly. Let play and have fun, because that exercised the imagination. Play with him, it will help your long term mental health. As humans are living longer, they are maturing slower. Remember, in the Bible it talks about a child of 100 years of age playing on the borrow of a snake.

Allow him to follow his own interests, and provide information for him when he wants it. Don't push him or you'll end up with an unwilling rebel on your hands. Most children are very interested in something, whether it's dinosaurs or Superman, or insects or football. Whatever it turns out to be, there is information about it in libraries or on the net. If you don't want him on the computer because of the dangers, you can get the information for him. Whatever he loves to do, encourage and appreciate him! :) (And please, don't compare him with his mate!)

Your child is, in my opinion, actually not stupid. Too bad you did not say if you had already done sth about it. I recommend your child to talk to somebody.
