The heartagram stands for HIM as a band, as an entity. And for love metal in general." Ville Valo
"For me, it's like a new version of the yin-yang," says Valo. "The pentagram is not necessarily an evil sign, but in horror movies and the entertainment world it's been interpreted as the sign of the devil. And the heart obviously represents something sweet and godly. Good and bad--it's all about the balance." Ville Valo
Most will tell you that it stands for an amalgam of love and hate (heart-love, pentagram-hate).
The beauty of HIM and the Heartagram is that their meanings are up for interpretation.
This is the logo that inspired the heartagram:

The heartagram is a trademarked symbol of the Finnish rock band HIM. It is the fusion of a heart symbol and a pentagram.
According to HIM front man, Ville Valo, the heartagram represents both love and death, common themes in Valo's lyrics. The pentagram itself has no implicit relation to hate, death, or negativity but is the symbol of Venus, the bringer of knowledge and illumination. TV star and hardcore HIM fan Bam Margera has paid HIM a fee to license the symbol and is accordingly entitled to use it for promotional purposes.
It is wrongly believed by some people that the heartagram is associated with satanism, but Ville Valo denies these claims

The heartagram is the trademarked symbol of HIM, best described as a combination of a heart and an inverted pentagram (love & hate), created by Ville Valo the day after his twentieth birthday. Valo has said that "the heartagram stands for HIM as a band, as an entity, and for 'love metal' in general."
