it is like asking 'how long is a piece of string'?!
If your main sorting office is in your town and you post first class to somebody else in that town, then they SHOULD receive said letter the following day.
Generally the Royal Mail are ok. I tend to have better luck with posting items first class to other parts of the country and they get there the following day.
Pure luck I think.

Royal Mail do not set any different targets for a letter in the same town, as opposed to a different town. The target for first class letters is that it will be delivered the next day, but this is not guaranteed.

Anything from 48 hours a couple of months plus , especially now every department has been made ultra efficient and economies introduced all the way round , thats why the begging bowl is being carted round to the government for tens of £Millions In handouts -- buy a pidgeon

Usually the next working day. But it can take 3 days sometimes! Or extremely rare- never get delivered as a result of being 'lost'

Should be next day. In my town it gets transported 40 miles to come back again. So can take days.

when I worked at the P.O. first class was delivered by the next available delivery if it was collected in the early morning 7.0-9.0. ish then it was possible to deliver same day (in the same area) living abroad now i'm not sure if there is still a second delivery if there is then the same should apply.

In theory any first class letter should only take one day to deliver on mainland Britain.

depends where your distribution centre is, in theory it should arrive on the next available post on the following day...not always guaranteed though...ask at your local post office.

it's supposed to get there by the next day and it used to in days gone by but nowadays the post office are not as good. if you post it before 3.30pm, then it should definitely get there the next day
