Itachi learned of the secret true power of the Sharingan; if one who possessed the Sharingan killed his closest friend, then he would gain the ability to use the Makengyo Sharingan (the highest level of th Sharingan power)and the powerful abilities it granted. Deciding to further himself at the cost of the clan, Itachi killed his cousin and best friend Shisui, setting it up to look as though Shisui had committed suicide. While Sasuke was away, Itachi took the opportunity to finally act upon his long-repressed resentments. Again choosing to value his own abilities above the lives of his family, Itachi slaughtered the entire clan to test his own power. When Sasuke returned to find what his brother had done, Itachi told him that if he wanted revenge, Sasuke would have to lead a dark, despicable life, and gain the Makengyo Sharingan as well. Thus, Itachi left only his brother alive as part of his plan to strengthen himself in the future with a duel against another Makengyo Sharingan user.

Sorry if too much info but he basically he killed his family (other that Sasuke) to test his power then later test his power on another Makengyo Sharingan user, in this case Sasuke.

Because Itachi wanted a worthy rival when Sasuke grew up. Sasuke would be fueled by revenge against Itachi for killing the whole Uchiha clan, so therefore becoming a worthy opponent. Not to mention that Sasuke would probably have Mangekyou Sharingan at that time anyway

Itachi became so powerful that he wanted to find someone stronger. Itachi was the strongest and fastest fighter since he enter the academy. He was so strong that everyone one feared him. So he had no need for his clan and his own family that he killed his parents. But he saw that there was something different about sasuke. He wanted someone as strong as him to kill him for some reason and his own brother would be the one.

well, that is too many to say...i will just copy from wikipedia.hope you can understand better from there..

The reason Itachi killed his clan, and the reason he left only his brother Sasuke alive, still remains unclear. When questioned by Sasuke, he replied "To test my 'utsuwa'." In Japanese, 'utsuwa' (器) can mean "vessel," or "container," but it can also mean "ability," or "tool." Orochimaru uses this word to refer to the bodies he takes over with his Fushi Tensei no Jutsu ("Living Corpse Reincarnation"). In this respect, Itachi's words can mean anything from him having a past connection with Orochimaru, to him simply wanting to test his own power, or to his plans to join Akatsuki and forsake past relations. To make matters even more ambiguous, the first person pronoun Itachi used can also be used as a vulgar second person pronoun, so he could also have meant that he wanted to test Sasuke's 'utsuwa,' although this is unlikely, given his previous remarks about his 'utsuwa'.

Either he wanted to test his strength or he was really mad at his father for pushing him too far...It's because I read that he wanted to be at Sasuke's entrance occasion for the ninja academy or something ,like that. Itachi wanted to go because there had to be a family relative, but his father said he'll go....maybe that's the problem...
