WHOA!!! you blew my mind. lets work through this together. we are working with Murphy's law here.... so...
if you love the cat and want to keep him around as a pet... the slice will land butter side up and the cat will die.
if you hate the cat and wish it to be gone.... the slice will land butter side down and the cat will be just fine despite being dropped from the window.
when dealing w/ Murphy.. you gotta look at the whole picture

If you've watched the two crazy dudes on Mythbusters/Discovery Channel, they've actually done the Buttered-Side Up test, in the most incredulous way no less. Took the buttered bread up to high rise building and did about a 100 pieces sample. Turns out the result is the same as a simple coin flip if the sample size is big enough: 50-50!

The slice wouldn't land on the ground, the cat would...
In any case, bread doesn't always land buttered side down, it only APPEARS to, because we set the buttered side up on plates when we knock it off it has only enough room (from table to floor) to make a 180 degree flip. If you put the buttered side down on your plate it would 1) stick to the plate or 2) if it did drop it would drop buttered side up.
And I swear I have seen cats survive 1-story falls. Those little devils are like cockroachs, they're impossible to kill, thus the old 9 lives myth.

Murphy's Law, "Things will go wrong in any given situation if you give them a chance." Isn't the bread landing butter side down the worst thing that could happen, especially if it is your last piece of bread. Putting a cat in that perdicament is guaranteeing that something bad will happen. Look up Murphy's Law at Wikipedia...please.

It's going to land on the cat's back, and the cat is going to land on it's feet. The glue side of the bread will be facing downward. Butter up!

Speculating, rather than actually gluing a piece of bread to a cat, is ok. I believe the cat will land on its feet despite having the piece of bread on it.
Please don't be cruel to animals.

umm, believe it or not, i have heard a question like this before and i think i was told that one of my boyfriends dumbass mates tried to test it, but he said that the cat landed on its feet but then ate the bread, i dont know if that quite answers your question but i think its the closest that you will probably get to the truth, sort of...

It wil rotate around and round mid air for eternity. Since we haven't discovered how to properly attach the toast though, we have not yet been able to achieve limitless energy.

Look up 'Murphy's Law' (your homework for being silly!)...It's actually really very interesting.
...hint. It has something to do with 'rockets'.
