I learned this one as a substitute teacher. The kids in the class liked it.
Have all the students sit on their desks or stand by their chairs.
Give the first student the spelling word. As they spell it, write the word on the board (this way the speller can see the word).
If the word is spelled correctly, the class stays quiet. If the word is incorrect, the class says "BOOM!" and the speller sits in his chair.
Continue around the room until one student is left. You can decide on a small reward.
I left all the correct spellings on the board so the students could see them. This allowed them to continue practicing the words to themselves.
This game does move very quickly. It work better after a few weeks when you have past spelling words from which to draw. You may have to change it around a little to suit your needs, but give it a try.

Same question gets the same answer :
Races. Works really well. You have 2 or 3 kids up at a blackboard (or whiteboard), and then say the word, and whoever gets it correct first gets a point. At the end of a week, they can get a small reward, like a bookmark. Or you can cut out the reward, and just have whoever wins, stay up there til they lose. And they get to be the King of Spelling.

There is an activity called pyramids, kids spell a work letter by letter, for example
yahoo
y
ya
yah
yaho
yahoo
Another excellent ESL teacher taught me how to play a game. You put your kids in a circle, and you tell them to spell a letter, first kid y, second a, 3rd, h, 4th o 5th o, then, the 6th kid have to say a special word to indicate the word is spelt. In my case it was Sparkle.
I have a lot of fun in spelling.

a spelling bee. or each row in the class is a team- you say the word such as "apple" the first person in the row writes "a" on the paper then each person passes the paper back and writes "p" then when the paper is passed enough times to spell apple you see which team spelled it correctly

like active learning? think about the middle line of writing paper. Clap above your head if the letter goes above the midline (b,d,f,h,k,l,t); clap below your waist for letters below the midline (g,j,p,q,y); clap at your chest for those other letters (a,c,e,m,n,o,r,s,u,v,w,x,z); add one more thing, snap for the vowels.
I don't know what this is called, but it is quite fun and active, and also makes them think about the way the letters look, not just what they are.
