Why do you want to drive?

If you really don't need your car then look at flying up and maybe renting a car when you get to the Gold Coast. Check out the cheap airfares available and compare them to the cost of driving 2,000 klms at $1.40 a litre. You may find it's cheaper to fly - and you get another few days holidays (on the beach instead of stuck in a car).

Great question. I have done that trip at least 20 times. There is a difference between the shortest and the best though.
I usually aim for Albury Wodonga. Gundagai. Sydney (Outskirts) , Newcastle, Taree, Coffs then Gold Coast.
A non stop drive averaging 100 - 110 will still take about 27 hours with rest stops and piss breaks.

A few hours north of Sydney you will get the option to choose the Pacific or New England Hwy's??? The diference in distance between the two is only 30k's. The Pacific is the better option. More phone coverage and better if you have breakdown issues. The New England has less traffic but a **** load more trucks use it because of the straight stretches of road and fewer police around this can get scary for novice drivers. They will test your skills for sure.

This is a long long drive...24 hours nonstop.
Unless you just love driving and don't mind the cost of gasoline, consider flying. You'll save time, maybe money, and have extra days to play.
Here'e a link with cheap airlines that fly between the both places.

Have fun! Wish I were back there...you'll love it!

The Hume/Newell inland (i.e. via Brisbane) is often better than the Highway 1 (Pacific) from Melbourne.
