The number of fans in attendance at the Rose Bowl in January 2004 exceeded 90,000.
That is, the "amount" wasn't over 90,000--the "number" was.

Comma between January and 2004. ANd write 90,000 in words, and not numbers.

And your point would be what? Football fans follow their teams. If fans aren't there for their team, its called tourism, then. Helpful to the community, usually. In Lincoln, Nebraska, on a home game, it isn't uncommon to have 50,000 in attendance (we have a big stadium). That's collegiate football for ya!
