Have you thought about pay per click programs? The two biggest, I think, are Yahoo! and Google

A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:

1) Create a blog pertaining to your field

2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!

3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.

4) Advertise on Craiglist

Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.

I listed a few handy sites & articles relating to marketing, promotion & advertising. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Start to tell your friends about the website. If the content / concept is good, they will naturally pass the website on to their friends and so on so forth.

Do include a "tell a friend" feature to allow the user to immediately send out invitations via your website.

Include newsletters which can be sent out to those who opted in for one. They help you to retain the audience through email.

One more effective marketing would be to stand infront of major traffic-flow places (eg: MRT, shopping entrances, etc.) and distribute flyers or some promotional items. That can draw another stream of people to your new website.

You can also add your website link in your profile. It is not wrong to do that, but please do not spam through the questions (it is not ethical to do so).

All the best in getting the traffic to your site. :)

Send out news releases on the release of your website. Write several that target several angles of your products/services. Then you can send it to the local media as well as global with the web.

Also, join different online networks can be used as well.

get invited to people networks like orkut and try making friends...if you can be funny and make them curious, think they will hit on to your website...also commenting on other people's blogs and pasting your web address would make them invaribaly click it...its abt being ubiquitous so give ppl attention online and u will get it back...also (this would be more succesful for business ideas) if you can find and friend 'cult leaders' (this is what Red Bull did and is nowadays smthing akin to P2P marketing/word of mouth), you can always use their help to give you a presence on their blogs/websites etc. ..in none of your conversations overemphasize on your secondary gain...rather treat it more like a socialization exercise and yeah never be a dork in your conversations...best of luck!!!
