a tachometer is what tells a driver and team how hard an engine is working, since it measures the engine's revolutions per minute. this is important for the life of an engine, since they need to be better prepared for a place like atlanta, where rpm's hang over 9000, and be "less" worried in martinsville or bristol, where rpms go up and down. it also tell the driver how fast he should go while in pit lane. ( i think pit lane speed is 4600 rpms)

My husband and I both drag race and have Tachometers in our mustangs. They actually measure the rotation of the crankshaft. In the car it displayes the RPM.
