Because they are stuck in a loop of delusion and ignorance and for them to admit they were wrong on such things would require them to restructure their own identities.

If you're talking about the Bible, then I have a question for you: Have you TRIED reading it? I notice that everyone (every person I've spoken to, seen on TV, or read in a magazine, book, reference) that asks this question or said the statement of the Bible being no longer applicable has often not picked up a Bible to read it for themselves, often relying on second-to-third hand accounts, and often from other misguided people.
I put this in the category of a parents' group banning a book they have never read.
If you read the Bible, you will notice there are solutions to many of our modern day problems that we fail to follow: 'Don't cast your pearls before swine' What does this mean? It means that if you have something to offer someone in the ways of wisdom, wealth, or even a helping hand, offer it to those that will appreciate and even use it, and don't waste your time with those that don't want it. Simple enough, yet, many of us fail to follow this bit of common sense.
There are a lot of books in the New Testament that gives financial help, such as how to divide your salary so that some of it is given to tithe (in church) or to a favorite charity/organization or another religious institution, and to save your money wisely- Isn't Suzan Orman, and other financial gurus now saying this? The Bible has been saying this longer than they've been in the public eye.
There are also countless, detailed lists and advice on how a man should treat his wife (divorce rates are high, because, apparently, a lot of men aren't following the advice), how to avoid bankruptcy and not deal with lawyers(!)... "Hello, credit counseling?"
'No longer applicable to modern society'? What about biblical people avoiding responsibility for their own actions, and once they owned up to their mistakes, made things better for others, and even found their own destiny in the deal?
What about how to treat others different from you?
How to take care of the environment?
Clear-cut medical instructions... before we had penicillin?
Still think the Bible is outdated? I suggest reading it.
I am well-read and knowledgeable because my deity (That's cute. You've made him personable, which is what he is) is an intelligent being and I very much DO use the brain he gave me to learn and be cognitive.

It is very simple to explain, they have read it and perhaps did not understand it, but transform it into something they do understand.
There have been so many stupid questions that shows that the person have not the most basic idea how to read and understand those books you might refer to. Much of the Greek thinking 2400 years ago is still good enough and will be in the future too and the New Testament is full of words spoken by those philosopher. Aristotle's said: If you don' t choose the politician well when you elect them, you will be run by fools.

I think societies are scared of change...the thought of having to think for themselves and not have a book to tell them what is right and wrong is just too much. People need something to believe in. As individuals, people can believe in a deity, yet have some questions about the religious writings, yet if these questions were aired amongst society they would be damned. And to be damned by those around you is something most would not wish upon themselves.
Many beliefs are so ingrained into a society's consciousness, it would take something huge to make them question them.

Yeah, right. History books are the way to go. Columbus discovered America (while raping and killing his way across the southern continent). Indians were dirty savages (except they were never from India, and they were only protecting their women and young from a hostile invader). Christians were always the good guys (except when they were killing innocents during the Salem Witch Trials and the Spanish Inquisition). I believe in God, but not in human dumbassedness. Get a clue, and grow a mind of your own. "Truth" is very much a subjective term when it comes to human history. Question authority. Live free, and with God.

Why do athiest people care some much about christianity? It seems every agnostic or atheist ( or non believer in GOD ) have something to say about Christianity. If you don't care if there is a god, and don't think one exists, let it die. Christians don't ask nearly as many questions as athiests do. For something or someone you don't believe in, you people sure do ask a lot of friggen questions. Who cares if we believe in the bible or someone you don't believe is there? Let us believe what we want to believe, and let you not believe what you do not believe in. Just make sure you never use the term " oh my god" if someone should ever come up and kill you, or if you're taking your last breath.
WHO CARES what we believe in, is the answer.

Mostly in my opinion they if they do believe in historical and scientific it will knock them off of what ever they belive is right so the mind can't handle it. Now on the Biblical side I once read God will not condem you for believing a lie but He will condem you for not going out there to find out WHAT IS TRUTH OR WHAT IS THE TRUTH!

JoeThatUKnow has the right idea. The beliefs literally make up a part of them, they are attached to these beliefs like we are to our limbs. If someone told you to rip off your arm would you do it?
The church trys to get you while your young so the beliefs are so embedding into your mind, you are forced to change who you are in order to be logical... and people can't do it.

Bravo.....I ask this same question all of the time. The sad thing is these people will defend their beliefs even without evidence. I just don't get it.

crazy thing is that schools and colleges tend to make people believe it's all that important. Just be good to your fellow humans is all schools should teach. And SHARE people, SHARE...it's not that hard.
