The Joker the character can die. What Alex Ross was referring to was the archetype of the Joker. The idea of the Joker as an archenemies to Batman is what ensures that one will survive as long as the other. Joker the idea represents chaos, uncontrolled human emotion, and lunacy, compared to the Batman's focus on order, justice, and control. The two are opposites in many ways and have come to define one another. Both are normal men, with no special powers. The Joker has no special abilities because of the vat he fell into, just that it increased his psychosis. So yes the Joker can die, but he never will until Batman dies.

I don't know if falling in a vat of chemicals gave The Joker extre longevity or not, but you never know! Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime in 1989's Batman had the character fall to his death, but even people were asking "Is he really dead?" & will it ever open the door for an appearence in any sequels after that? Well, it didn't happened, & with the sequel to Batman Begins getting ready to be started sometime next year, The Joker will be making his appearance, but with a different actor in the role, & for what I can say is that Joker cannot die in any forms of the media. He will live on to taunt Batman for as long as he lives.

Don't go by those horrible Tim (I have never read a comic book in my life) Burton movies.
The Joker, when written well, has died. See Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker cartoon. If you can find the uncut/unrated version even better.
It's not only a very good animated movie, it has some very interesting plot twists and reveals some info on the relationship between Batman, the Joker, what happened with one of the Robins, etc.

My heavens, I never have been flashed, but I did unintentionally flash a few folks once. I was in the hospital some time back and decided to take a stoll to the vending area. Well, I wasn't thinking about what I was wearing and, let's just say that those hospital gowns don't leave a lot to the imagination on the backside. The nurse came up from behind me and put a blanket over my shoulders . . . I was wondering why it was a little drafty back there!

Yes. He is/was not immortal. Although highly intelligent (usually difference between genius and insanity are only a few degrees either way), no other powers were evident with this character. I did not hear he was impervious to pain although many mortals can be trained to ignore it. There lies the mystery and the wonder of the Joker.

That's just a myth brought one by the fact that he is insane and very smart. He can be hurt and killed. He actually was killed off in one Batman storyline. Alex Ross was referring to the Joker's Legacy as the most twisted villan ever that will never die, not the criminal himself. Maybe it was just the fact that the Joker killed Robin and true Batman fans will always be grateful.

maybe he meant that the joker as a character cannot die because he is the arch nemesis of batman. he, like lex luthor and superman, cannot exist without batman and vice versa. dc comics would never kill off such a popular and needed villain. as for the powers of the Joker, no he doesn't have immortality and he is not impervious. here's a good site for more info on hm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_%28comics%29#Powers_and_abilities

Joker did fall into a vat of acid (after his wife/girlfriend died in a car accident I think), but I don't know about the acid making him invincible. Maybe Mr. Ross was talking about the archetype of the joker? No clue.
