If my car gets 25 miles per gallon. And gas is $3.00 per gallon. And I travel 3 miles, how much have I spent?
Can you write out the equation/formula. This isn't homework, I'm just not good with math and want to know.
Thanks

So it's...
PriceOfGas / MilesPerGallon = PricePerMile
then take...
PricePerMile * MilesToTravel = TotalPriceOfTravel
Hope I've got it now.

Thanks wow, these are all helpful. I'm now calculating how much money I waste driving to and from places. Very cool =)

It's a different way to break down the data. It asks two different questions. How much gas does it take to get one mile? Or, how many miles can I go on one gallon of gas? If your car get 30 miles per gallon, that would be the answer to the second question. If you were trying to answer the first question, it would be some fraction of a gallon of gas (1/30th I guess).

In 3 miles you use 3/25 gallon. Each gallon cost $3.00, so you have used (3/25)*$3.00 worth: 36 cents.

3 miles x 1 gallon/25 miles x $3.00/gallon = $ 0.36
It's like dimensional conversion. You have to cross out the units as you multiply across. (For lack of ability to make the format in this set up, imagine the terms as fractions and you are cross cancelling the units.)

You know you're getting 25 miles/gallon for $3.00 dollars. Divide the $3.00 into the twenty five miles. That's $0.12/mile. You already know you're traveling 3 miles. Just multiply $0.12 * 3 miles.
$3.00/25 miles per gal ( 3 miles ) = $0.36/3 miles

y = 3/25 ; gives the percentage of 3mi to 25mi per gallon
y = 0.12 ; 12%
3.00 x 0.12 ; Determine 12% of $3
0.36 ; You spent 36 cents
100/12 = 8 1/3 ; proof
0.36 x 8 1/3 = 3.00 ; Hope this helps

So this is how you solve something like this:
You are given:
- 25 miles per gallon
- 3 dollars per gallon
- 3 miles traveled
You want to find:
Dollars spent.
First you draw a long line, then put an equals sign, a blank space and your final unit there:
-------------------------------------------------- = _______ dollars
Now you put your first data with dollars in the top on the line:
3 dollars
--------------------------------------------- = _______ dollars
1 gallon
Next your find something that right side up, or upside down can have gallons on top (cause you need to get rid of the gallons). You multiply the first data by it:
3 dollars * 1 gallon
--------------------------------------------- = _______ dollars
1 gallon * 25 miles
Anything divided by itself cancels out. The 1 gallon on top and 1 gallon on the bottom divide out and this leaves:
3 dollars
--------------------------------------------- = _______ dollars
25 miles
Finally you look for something that has miles in it to multiply out and leave only dollars. Thats your three miles. Multiplying the top by it gives.
3 dollars * 3 miles
--------------------------------------------- = _______ dollars
25 miles
The miles divide out and you get
(3*3) dollars
---------------- = (9/25) dollars
25
so its 9/25 miles.
You multiply cost per gallon and miles traveled, and divide by mileage per gallon to get the total dollars spent.
