All criminals are popular. it is becasue we vallue those who "get over," on some level, even us goodies-2-shoes, admire the ones who break the rules, we like bad boys and girls. Look around: mobsters in the 20's-40's, the greasers in the 50's, the rebels, the thugs, scareface, pirates, the government....we glorify them and make movies and songs and videos about them.

Because Johnny Depp is hot.
Pirates are used for sports teams because pirates as a symbol are meant to put fear into the opponants, like cougars, jaguars, tigers, etc.
As for the rest - Johnny Depp is hot.

Beats me. As far as I'm concerned, they are the enemies of civilization, along with terrorists and other barbarians.
But people like to have a romantic view of things.
And real piracy is far away in time or space (Somalia, anyone)

Their lifestyle has been seriously romanticized. Furthermore, I think it's easy for people to have some sort of odd pride in rebellious figures that existed previously that no longer exist now.
