i would suggest to go to this link http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
it's an online antivirus scaner. maybe it would help you. because usually viruses can disable the antivirus detection but with online scaner there is nothing to disable because there is just a plugin and no .exe file that he can infect. You can give it a try.

Seems to me that you've been hit by an AV Killer. Unfortunately, removing this and many of the Trojan Horses and worms and keyloggers, which no Anti-Virus can detect, nor remove; has to be done manually. And since this has to be daone at the regedit level, you need to be a professional to do it.
Since you don't know the specific worm or trojan, it gets more difficult. And you say you're a novice. Which makes it totally scary.
Therefore, the only option is to format the hard disc and re-install everthing. Because the worm would've infected everything by now; so, I'm sorry I have to give you the bad news that all your data will be junk by now. Trying to save anything is very dicey, because you could bring the infection back with these things. It's a great pity, but that's the truth.
If you have the Windows XP installation disc, you could do this.
Now, in the case you don't have the installation disc; then the problem gets even worse.
However, not to worry! You can download and install Ubuntu Linux instead.
You'll need to do this from some other virus free computer, though, like from some friend; to avoid having a defective installation disc and problems again.
You can get the free of cost iso image download at the first link given below and the Tutiorial at the second.
Take a printout of the Tutiorial and use the CD, following the steps given there.
Ubuntu will format the hard drive as it installs and your problems will be fixed.
You'll be happy you went Linux, since it's more robust than Windows.
All the best.
Cheers.

Never go for free stuff unless you know the site is completely safe. I will tell you how to do this later.
First, If you can go to this site and run the online scan and removal. Run the full scan and then select all that it finds for removal.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
If that site did not remove it or left any infections then go here and read this page first. Then follow the procedure she describes. It look daunting but is well explained and should not be a problem for you.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/bugbusting.mspx
Once you are finished, be sure to use one of the two Registry Repair programs she lists in the procedure. If the Trend Micro site removed all of the infection then use this registry repair after it.
Windows XP only
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Windows XP and all others except 95
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Hopefully you computer is clean by now. To know if a site is safe, go to this McAfee Site Advisor site and download it. The site will explain how it works. It is Free.
http://www.siteadvisor.com/
Now I recommend you go to this site a learn about Malware infections and how to protect your computer. It is not written or explained in GEEK. You will come away with a great knowledge base and will be able protect your computer properly. If you don't have the time to read this site, you will be forced to find the time to remove the Malware that infects your computer.

You probably have spyware.
Keep your own Anti-virus up to date, and check the status regularly.
Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an upexpected pop-up.
Download and install FireFox free from http://www.mozilla.com This is a browser that is safer to use than IE. Use this for general surfing and google searching. Only use IE when you MUST have IE, such as Windows Updates.
If you have Windows XP with SP2, activate the Windows firewall and check the status. If you don't, get Zone Alarm the free version from http://www.zonelabs.com
Take these steps to keep your computer ALIVE.

I would run a virus program and see what it picks up. Also go to start>run and type msconfig and click okay when that opens under the General Tab click selective start up, then under the Start Up Tab you should have your virus program, spyware program, your touchpad software and your wireless assisstant if you have one and thats all that needs to be checked. If anything else is checked uncheck it and then click apply and then exit and restart. Also go to your C drive and explore it if you see any of the files left over from the programs you have uninstalled manually delete them. The programs I use for antivirus is AVG it is a free program and works EXCELLENT and for antispyware I use ewido which has a free version that works with AVG. My contact info will be in the know your source area.....good luck!

Okay, I'll help. Write this down: Take your cursor to the 'start' tab which comes up on the botton left corner of your screen when you put your cursor over it. A menu will pop up. Click on 'all programs' which is right above 'start'. That will bring up another menu, take your cursor up to 'accessories>', that will open another menu. Then take your cursor to 'system tools', that will bring up one more menu. From that last menu click on 'system restore'.
Once in system restore click to 'restore your computer to an earlier date'. It'll take you to the next page where you'll see a calendar, chose any date in bold, a date prior to your troubles. The computer will do the rest. It will restore all of your setting back to where they were before your trouble began.
Screen savers, smileys, etc. can be real trouble. When you get done you should install AVG Free (anti-virus) from http://grisoft.com , if you don't already have it. I am by no means a computer whiz but if you have any more trouble you can e-mail me wayne @ savage art works .com (with no spaces.Good luck. If this works please pick me as best answer. Thank you.

the softwares you are using to scan will only pull up adwares and other annoying marketing bots, you have a slim chance of finding a virus with an adware software even one as good as spybot. what you need is an anti virus software, a few good brands include kapersky, norton, mcafee and avast. you can get trial versions of most, avast has a free personal edition for your pc which is highly rated. check --> download.com, but a word of caution, please read through the reviews thoroughly and get to know the pros and cons of anything you want to download before going ahead with it, it will keep you safe. after running a virus scan, schedule a regular backup of your important files to help protect you from incidences like this in future.
IM me if you need additional help.

You need to get the computer into safe-mode. This will allow you to run Spybot and other malware killers, as well as your anti virus program.
This site has instructions for different computers. Find the instructions for yours. In safe-mode non-essential programs will not run and all those pop-ups will be shut off. http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
If you do not have an anti virus, get one, it is critical to your computer. I recommend McAfee. I have used it for a lot of years and have never had one virus get past it.
http://www.mcafee.com
P.S. Norton products screw up computers. Not always so you notice it, but they do and I have repaired many a computer by simply removing the Norton products (anti virus, etc.). This is why I do not recommend Norton.

You need to do a full virus scan with a up to date anti-virus program. Depending on the results of the scan you can take the steps necessary to clear the problem.
If you don't have an up to date anti-virus program go to: www.avg.com and look for the link to dl the free program.
Before you run it, check for updates.
Good Luck!

Why do people -YOU- think they are immune from viruses?
Get Norton's AVS.
Stay away from Macafee AVS.
AND Firewall your PC. Tiny, ZoneAlarm, etc. The XP sp2 wall is too flimsy.
Remember: 1 system FW & 1 System AVS. OK for mult spyware checkers. Oh, w/ Norton, If Lve Updates can be set to automatic, make it so. If Microsoft Updates aren't also, change it.

Go to Windows security website,
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
this is a free service,
so thats a good thing :~),
and run the tool, if you can choose the "full system scan" it takes a while so use it when you don't want to do anything else on your computer,
hope this helps,
you can leave a message in my" page" IM, if you get stuck.
