Both, it was a good angst movie about forbidden gay love. I thought the movie was very real; showing the anger that each felt with himself for being attracted to men and this making it nearly impossible for them to lead a normal life meaning being happy with a wife and 2.5 kids.
It also portrayed being separated from a lover perfectly. You could easily take the fact that they were gay and throw it out when you see how they react to being separated and never being able to really be together. The same pain and longing happen with straight relationships.
I found Brokeback Mountain to be gritty, true to real life, and honest about relationships, the acceptance of the gay lifestyle in the cowboy community, and the struggle to just get by in life.

Garbage. Thin attempt to ram gay culture down the throats of people. That's what caused it to fail so bad at the box office.
Goes out of its way to overlap male machismo stereotypes with homosexuality in an attempt to normalize gays. Fails miserably. Instead, shows two of the more inappropriate gay stereotypes....the gay man as a sexual predator and gay men not caring who they hurt by selfishly marrying women while having perverted affairs on the side with other men.
Here's an idea. Take a normal genre film and make the protagonist gay. Go out of your way to portray him as normal, with good values. Give him a love interest that is also a decent, normal person. Maybe show them getting married and being upstanding members of the community. Do a good job with the film.
Maybe that will succeed as a film. Stop being so heavy handed and obvious with the propaganda.
Sheesh.

It was gay in the sense that it was about two gay cowboys. I liked it though--found the story intriguing and the actors' portrayals believable and deserving of the awards they were nominated for. Never thought it deserved Best Picture--Crash was the right choice there.

OMG, in case you theory they "confirmed somewhat to(sic) a lot"....too a lot of what? The mountains? The sheep? Yeah, i ought to consider that! in my opinion, i replaced into no longer thrilled with it. It curiously stayed pretty genuine to the unique short tale (except for Jack's family individuals scenes in Texas...that were truly undesirable). a number of the thoughts rang genuine (the issue of their courting given it is double-existence nature). yet, contained in the top, i did not imagine it did significantly better than deliver an previous, drained message: once you're gay, you extra ideal save quiet, in the different case you'll finally end up useless or a loner. Sorry. i'm ill of that being the purely gay tale line (besides campy queerness) *Hollywood* is prepared to inform.

Both!
(Not that there's anything wrong with that)
It's a good movie centering around a gay (male) relationship. Not th best movie I've ever seen, but well made.
