Oh, a good and an innocent child like question !
Please try to remember the question, and if possible the answer that really suits !
When at school, we take lot of efforts to commit something to memory, especially when it makes no sense to us ! We try all those things that comes handy, like co-relating some 'known' funny word, joke, uttering which is easier to remember. This is the process of mind handling memory bank 'foreseeing' something likely to be needed at a future date.
As a child, no such compulsions, the brain is busy to take EVERYTHING that comes its way, and spends no time to analyse, assimilate, co-relate, store-for-retrieval, or anything of that sort. Unrelated items are also stored, but not "available" for recall ! It is just like in a hard disk, the 'link' to the file was not created (or even obliterated) and therefore the file or data 'appears' to be deleted/lost. Only , unlike hard disks, we have unlimited GB storage space, hence, no chance of being over-written !
More or less like a hard disk ! See, another strange phenomenon, man creates some of the best things as a prototype of himself (computer, robots, artificial intelligence, why, even God's image !).

Because babies have not developed the mental cognitive ability to remember long term memories. This starts to develop at around age 3 or a little before. This is why after about age three long term memories start becoming more clear and defined. However, babies have started to develop short term memories much sooner and this is why they show in their face that they know who you are, like when they see their mother or father and know a sense of comfort when around someone they remember.

Just how young are you talking about? I remember as far back as 3. We can't remember infancy because although we "had brains then," they were developing and learning about the world we live in.

I think there are several reasons we remember somethings better than others. We seem to remember the good and forget the unpleasant. Sometimes our lives just do not have many different experiences to reflect on.
