Your electric motor is going bad and should be replaced but for now shut it off. Kill the circuit break to it if you can and monitor the motor for flames/smoke, Just because you've shut it off does not mean that the fire will go out[if a fire has/is occuring]. monitor this for a long time if nessicary and do not stop watching it untill the houseing and ceiling is cool to the touch. If it flares up call the fire department.

It is an extreme fire hazard, yes, turn it off and tape the switch in the off position so no one can turn it back on. If it's newly installed then it is wired wrong. If it's not new then a wire has shorted. If the switch is off it should be safe because there will be no power wired to it. If it is a room with two switches, tape them both. If you rent, call your landlord. If you own call a handyman who should be able to install a new one for about $35 labor.

YEAH! turn it off now. You may have wiring that is burning or your motor is going out.
Check on it after a while to make sure its cooling down, you dont want to put water on it if its electical, you could cause a short.

Have a martini, sit back and inhale, it sure beats having to pay for cigarettes! (and the non-smokers can't complain about second hand smoke)
By the way, it you see fire call the fire department.
