Laptops nowadays have heat exhaust fans on the bottom. If you're setting this on a couch or your bed it will block the exhaust, which bakes your laptop and will eventually make it go kaput, unless you set, say, a small, smooth piece of wood beneath it. If the laptop has plenty space beneath it, take it in for repair from whoever you bought it from.
Don't open your laptop and go poking around if you don't know what you're doing. All laptops come with numerous warranty stickers positioned inside. If any of those are broken, you have no warranty.

Is it a newer laptop? Sometimes when there is too much dust next to a fan it will create this smell. Open the laptop and make sure no wires are melting on the heat sink or any other part of the laptop.
Shouldnt be too serious. Usually if it is followed by a wierd noise or if your computer starts acting irratically then you need to worry. Might mean your system is over heating.

The processing of data in a CPU causes it to generate a not so insignificant amount of heat... The metals contained within heat up and generate the aforementioned scent. Most newer laptops come equipped with safety features that cause it to involuntarily shut down after it exceeds a certain threshold. I do recommend keeping the intake off of the surface by at least half a centimeter and make sure the fan is working properly... Also, never leave it on 24/7 as laptops aren't nearly as durable as desktops and need the chance to cool down.

It's possible that it's overheating. If you know how to do so correctly, open up the laptop, vacuum out the dust from all of the fans.
Check your laptops' cooling vents. Vacuum them from the outside. If you can safely do so (without frying anything) install a program called Speedfan and email me your temperatures (alloy45224@yahoo.com). I'll do some extra research for you and see what can be done.
If you can't safely install and run speedfan try to email me your laptop's specifications (be as detailed as possible), and I'll do some looking around.

All the whizzing doohickeys inside the machine move about, and this causes friction and heat and that smell that you detect as well.

It might be because you have it on a soft surface like carpet or your lap. If that is not it than you need to take it to a computer shop

if you have a mac they do run hotter than PC's
make sure you aren't blocking the air with a blanket like on your bed or on thick carpet that can overheat it easily
