recently in my home town a false news story almost ruined a mans life. How do we sponsor a bill to become law that makes the news media act more responsible? Please don't tell me this man (a Neighbor ) has the right to file a law suit. Once it's out there it's out there

thanks to every one for the input I do not think I made my self clear. I do not want sensorship just a law to inforce responsibility. If you sue you aare punshing the insurance company that holds their policy, even if the reporter is held liable for monotary damnages it takes years to settle. Why not hold the reporter legally liable for false reporting?

I agree with going the lawsuit route, but as far as forcing the news media to be responsible, you have to remember one thing: follow the money. Contact as many viewers/subscribers as you can and try to convince them to stop getting that news service. Contact the people who advertise in that service and let them know that you and however many others are dropping that service. If they see advertising revenue dropping either they will shape up or go out of business.

There is no way the type law you are proposing would be constitutional. Your friend is stuck with suing for damages. You can't exercise prior restraint over the media without violating freedom of the press.

First, yes he should file a lawsuit and the millions he receives may help a little. Second, contact your local representative and senator and they will be able to help you. It will likely involve getting lots of signatures and making some sort of a referendum.
