I'm sending someone I know over the internet (buying something off of them) a money order. I don't want this person to know my real name, but at the same time I'm afraid they might do a background check or something, no?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not worried about background checks as I haven't committed any crimes. I'm just wondering if it's illegal to write a false first name or last name on it the money order. The money order is just $15.98 so I'm not too worried about having it ensured. I'm hope I made more sense.

It doesn't matter if you use a false name or not unless there comes a time when you need to get a refund for that money order (e.g. it gets lost) and have to show identification. Why would someone do a background check on you? Besides, if you are buying something, won't the person have your real address? If you are that worried, don't make purchases from people you don't know or feel you can't trust.

If this person doesn't know your real name then I think you should ask someone at the post office about this just in case you are planning to insure the item.
If you insure the item and something happens to it and you use a false name you may have trouble collecting the insurance on that item and I would always insure the item just in case or you could be out all the money that you have invested.
Is there a reason for not wanting this person to know your name?
I really don't think that person will do any kind of a background check on you and why would that person do it anyway? If you haven't done anything to that person then why worry so much about it, just send the money order but talk to the post office employee first about using a false name, okay.
Good luck.

Don't most money orders have you sign your name instead of just writing it? Just make the signature illegible...The only reason the other person would have to do a background check would be if the check didn't clear. Since it's a money order you should have nothing to worry about.

You'll be running afoul of money laundering and anti-terrorism laws by doing so. Proceed at your own risk.

Send me the cash and I'll write my name on it.
