I like GOOD music; that is, music that I find to be sincere, emotionally expressive, and original. By this definition, there is good "emo" music and bad emo music. I like it if it's the good kind. :)

In general, I really enjoy going to shows of hardcore emo bands, because it's fun. But even if I get into the music at a show, it doesn't mean I'd get into the same music at home with my CD player.

I agree with Chris M. Emo music has really evovled and is nothing like fugazi, and Sunny Day Real Estate anymore. It's really horrible bands like Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes that everyone makes those assumptions on. The problem with rock music is that everyone has their own definitions of sub-classifications, examples: metal, alternative, emo, punk, pop-punk, etc. Emo music was first of all wrongly named. Short for Emotional rock it wasn't (at first) used as a deroggatory term. Now it's another fad and stereotype. You know that the jock at your school? Well now you know "those emo kids wearing womens jeans with razor blades in their pockets. Frankly I don't get it, all music's emotional. Yeah, todays rock is pretty pre-fabricated and drowns in relationship problems, but so does most other music. Country? Pop? How about classic rock ballads? Think of one song that you like, I bet it's about someone struggling with their feelings. Now a days, people don't really know what emo is, so they name every band emo that was created after 2000. Or any band that they can't classify, like MCR who have a gothic look, screamo/hard rock sound and whose lyrics are extremely metaphorical to the point where you could read them like a horror story and never know what they're really talking about. Or Thursday, who have that "emo look", both scream and sing their hearts out not about relationships but about social issues (ex: homosexuality) and political issues. Their lyrics are just too discrete, to metaphorical to decipher to those who don't look closely. Most base their emo stereotypes on hopeless hearthrobs like Chris Caraba and crappy lyrics from Fal Out Boy.

NO! Emo is the worst thing that's happened to the world. Maybe worse than rap. Emo is just whiny cry-babies who complain about their problems. Emo or Screamo is most largely responsible for the death of Punk. I listen to Indie, Rock, Punk, Baroque, Garage...stuff like that, less mainstream

No, I don't like it. There are a few songs that I find very catchy, but I would never actually listen to it if it wasn't on the radio. I'm a metal girl at heart. But hey, more power to the emo kids for being who they are, even if I don't quite like it. It's them and they're smart for being themselves. But it's ridiculous when they cut themselves. That's just taking it too far.

EMO is awful. But that's just to me, and I'm a musician. EMO comes from the heart, and the music I like comes from the brain. I respect the clasical musicians, like Mozart and Beethoven, and the orchestral masterpieces, but what I listen to is progressive rock. That is rock music that has strong influences from clasical music. Some popular progressive rock bands are Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Tool, Jethro Tull, Yes, Dream Theater, Moody Blues(the later albums), and Electric Light Orchestra. Marillion is possibly my favorite band. They are without question a progressive rock band, but they also play quite a bit of soft music. They have a way of putting notes together to really pull me into the song and tap into my emotions like no other music ever has before.

EMO bands like Blue October are totally lame to me. In my opinion, they just throw some stupid chords together and put sad lyrics to it, and since the lyrics are sad, people like it. I don't listen to the lyrics in music, because that is not what impresses me. Anyone can write poetry, and anyone can throw some chords behind them. But to orchestrate a masterpiece of multiple instruments and vocals working together, now THAT takes talent!

The difference between Marillion's emotional aspects and B.O.'s emotional aspects is that Marillion taps into my emotions by the music, the instruments and the notes, and also sometimes the words. Blue October and like bands (try to) tap into my emotions by words alone.

Also, EMO bands whine. Their voices try to sound like they're "feeling" the music, but to me, they miss the notes and they sound like they're sick! I mean, come on! Just throw up already and start singing for real!

Still, though, I think you'd like Marillion. Check them out at www.myspace.com/marillion

And what the heck. check out my music to at www.myspace.com/brianburchband
You won't like it, but I like strangers to hear it anyway, might as well get my name out there when i can.

I imagine you do like EMO music, so I hope you're not offended by my answer. I was trying to stay respectful the entire time, and it's all JUST my opinion. Thank you.
