We used to live next door to a church and so we had quite a few people come to our door for $. We did give money out a few times. More often we gave them food or took them somewhere for a meal.
When my husband was in grad school he once had a man approach him in the campus parking lot and ask for money to eat. He said he hadn't eaten since the previous day. My husband didn't have any cash but he had his sack lunch since he was on his way to work. He offered the fellow his lunch, and the guy said, "No thanks, man, I really wanted to eat at McDonald's."!!
Lots of homeless people are mentally ill and need a lot more than money, food or booze.

The homeless people who hold up signs on street corners are most likely just looking for money to buy drugs or alchohol. If they really wanted food and a place to sleep at night all they would have to do is go to a homeless shelter.

Same thing . I saw a guy on the sidewalk in downtown Indianapolis. His sign said" I cannot lie. I want a beer". I got him a case. He was not much differant than myself. I am a slave to a job so I can buy my own. He was free as a bird .I think kindness does not mean self rightious. So unless you intend to give them the total rebab, be kind and help with their buzz. Peace out. Tony

Awhile back , there was an elderly woman dragging a black garbage bag full of empty pop cans along the main highway, so I stopped to pick her up. I noticed her shoes were tattered and too big for her feet. She told me she wanted to take her cans to a supermarket and get money for them. I took her to the recycling machine, helped her with her cans and then drove her back home. I gave her 20.00 dollars and told her to go buy herself a new pair of shoes. She said before she got out of my car, Jesus is coming soon! It touched my heart that day and I felt good to help someone in need.

If I do give money, its usually just change or a buck. I don't carry a lot of cash with me. I have given food and drinks to people who asked. I don't see anything wrong with it. I would hope that if I were ever in that situation, someone would offer me something.

In Phoenix we have these ragtag army hanging out at the long stoplights begging for coins. One Christmas I circled the block to stop at a liquour store and bought a 12-pack of Bud. Went back to the stoplight just to see their expression on their faces.

Couple of weeks go by and one of them remembered me blowing kisses and giving me a thumbs up.

It was a great feeling. They had a Christmas.

I NEVER give money... if they are truly hungry, they'll accept food over money.

Coming out of a Rico's pizza joint, some young kid approached, us, and we gave him 1/2 of a leftover pizza. He took it gratefully, and started eating it right away.

At an intersection in my hometown, a bunch of my friends and I pitched in money to buy a homeless vet some lunch. He was very pleased, and took his lunch, sat under a shady tree, and ate it, and left.

In San Francisco, my buddies & I all took one thing out of our sack lunches, and handed it to a pan handler there. He decided to go and trade it for "something" with another homeless person. Oh well!

My mother in-law buys fast food gift certificates and hands them out during the holidays...

BUT, I NEVER give out money... If they don't accept food, they are not starving!

I give to the disabled and to children. But I won't stop for anyone who wants you to stop your car on the freeway on-ramp/off-ramp so you can give them money. They should only be asking from people who are not driving.
