Tolkien is certainly on the list. I'm so sad to see people naming authors like Danielle Steele and John Grisham. They have popularity, but absolutely no literary merit. It's a bit depressing.
Orson Scott Card.

Emily Dickinson for Poetry, Poe for the Short Story, John Steinbeck for the average Novel, Karl Marx for political theory, and George Orwell for science fiction. Yeah, weak categories... My vote is still behind Emily Dickison, though...

My personal preferance is Dean Koontz. Tess Gerritson, J.D.Robb, John Saul,Dannielle Steele, Nora Roberts........I could go on and on. These are all great authors. I like reading mysteries with love thrown in or supernatural thrillers that have just enough everyday things that it makes it seem it could happen. Everyone has their own idea of who is best.
