No, you're not alone. I do it too. Want to start a club? We could get jackets!!
If my son(6 yr old) wants to watch a movie, I watch it first. Same with TV programs. If it's known to be offensive, it's off limits. Thank goodness for DVRs, he's watched the movie Because of Winn Dixie 20+ times, lol. But that's how I do it. I record shows/movies that he likes that I know are appropriate. Then, if he asks to watch Family Guy, not only can I say no, but I can offer to let him watch one of "his" movies/shows.

there was a couple of interesting articles i read about TV. I agree with you whole heartedly... TV doesn't stimulate the mind, it's proven... it's not like a book, it's not even like a video game.. it's worse.. it's vegetation... and it lacks any creative development because of how the material is presented to you, PLUS.. you have to put up with all the shocking articles... it's not such a sick world... no sicker than 1000 years ago, its just back then we didn't compile the most shocking information from over 6 billion lives and fill an hour slot with it :)
You shouldn't be harsh, but you're definately in the better direction.

Little boys like to pretend to shoot things. I had a girlfriend that constantly made the little 5 year old boys guilty for playing with toy guns saying stuff like, "That makes Jesus sad", etc. . Let little kids have fun and play war. That's what boys do and they do it without thinking of violence.
Teenagers on the other hand, I totally agree with you. Look at the crap on this site. Its vulgar and gross. A teenager would look at porn all day unless someone was there to stop him. Same with violence. But don't be too overprotective, that's not cool either. Then they won't feel comfortable having their friends over.

No I think a lot of moms would agree with you but realize this, you cannot protect them from everything and they are going to learn some things in school and from their peers. I think it's about time that we have some moms that are interested in what their kids are watching on tv instead of letting the tv dominate their lives. Good for you and keep it up.

I set limits on mine when she was growing up.
Now she chooses what she wants to watch.
She will ask if friends want to go see a movie she knows I might have a concern over (Horror etc)
I tell her my take on it and if she chooses to see it it is up to her.
She went to a scary show awhile back and told me the next day I was right scary movies just are not worth the nightmares sometimes.

well, my oldest is 4 and a half so i definitely monitor what my kids watch. but they tend to watch maybe an hour of tv a week. and i always pick for them so yes, i monitor their tv. they don't even ask me if they can watch tv. i usually have to suggest it. i've let my kids be normal kids (the way we used to be). the spend more time outside than inside and they run around more than anything else.

You are not wrong for monitoring your kids TV habits. It's tough enough raising childen in this "sick" world without polluting their minds with the garbage that is packed in TV and some movies.
Just remember: Garbage in, garbage out.

Its not what they see and hear in the media that will turn them "bad"
its whether or not your there for them, whether or not you see when they are down, whether or not you accept them for them, whether or not YOU do those things, its all about the impression you give them.
If you're too hard on your kids they will rebel in time, but dont slack off other wise they will end up doing drugs and feeling depressed. Do your best but dont over do it.

God bless you-I hope you're not the only parent out there still monitoring/filtering the media that your children take in. I don't do it, but then again I don't have any children.
Keep up the good (hard) work!
