Playstation II?
Here are a few to rent and check out. Grandia III, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Radiata Stories, both Xenosaga games, Kingdom Hearts (sort of cheesy that they mix Final Fantasy and Disney, but it does directly have Final Fantasy characters and stuff.), Shadow of the Colossus.
Like I said, rent them. None of them are exactly the same, although from a gameplay perspective you will find Xenosaga to be the closest. It's just an outer space story rather than swordfighting.

The Kingdom Hearts series is great, though it's kind of cheating if you consider that it's close enough to FF to be FF thanks to SquareEnix and all the cameos ;-)
Chrono Trigger (available in one of the compilations I mention below) and Chrono Cross are amazing.
A little more out there but also very fun is the .Hack series.
Suikoden is a great RPG.
If you have an XBOX, KOTOR, Fable, and Jade Empire are great RPGs.
Most importantly, have you played ALL the Final Fantasy games? They're all amazing in their own ways, and mostly available on PS-or-newer formatting. You can get 1 and 2 in Final Fantasy Origins. 4 is availble with Chrono Trigger in Final Fantasy Chronicles, and 5 and 6 are available in Final Fantasy Anthology (all 3 are PS1 releases). 7-9 are PS1, and 10 is PS2. 11, the online title, is a little more out there (I'm not big on MMORPGs, they take too much of a long-term commitment to get into), and both 12 and the Compilation of FF7 games are coming out later this year.

Kingdom Hearts, both 1 and 2. (You might see some familiar characters). These games are the most similar to the Final Fantasies that I have seen. If you have an X-box I would also recommend getting Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which is also very good, and it has great graphics. (KH is on PS2)

I'm a big Final Fantasy fan, and I thought Xenosaga had quite a few similarities. Infact, I think the creators of Xenosaga worked for Square in the past.
Good game, IMO.

I particularly enjoyed Wild Arms and Xenosaga. Soul Calibre is good too.
