I'm gonna take a stab in the dark, I believe the reason for crossing ones fingers would be to keep bad luck or curses from you. Though we are raised to believe it is to bring good luck, I believe it is to ward off bad luck. Not to make anything better but to keep from getting worse.

Crossing your fingers comes from an older saying :
"A promise is kept where two lines cross."
Your fingers are the lines, and by crossing them you are asking "the powers that be" to fulfill some hope, wish, or dream.
Does it DO anything? That depends on what you believe...
If you believe that the outcome of an event can be influenced by your feelings toward it, or if by making this little "good luck" sign you can call for a little extra help, then yeah!
About crossing your fingers when making a promise - remember the saying? The promise is kept there, where your fingers cross, as in a literal "place" ...when you uncross your fingers, that place no longer exists, so supposedly the promise no longer exists. This is, however, a bit of trickery that will get you in more trouble than it is worth.
In Christian symbology, this superstition had an influence on the design of the "cross" as we know it today. Roman crucifixions were performed on upright poles with a crossbar near the top, so it looked like the capital letter T. But, since the event of Jesus' crucifixion had such symbolic significance, as the ultimate promise of Heaven in the afterlife, the lines were made to visibly cross, now more closely resembling the lowercase letter t. As a sign, it more clearly communicates "promise kept here".

only if you believe in luck. The more you look at luck the more you will find that It is just smoke and mirrors. Stick to the things you can count on.

Crossing you fingers makes a crude sign of the cross, so you are asking for God's intervention.
Which is funny; when you cross you fingers when making a promise, it negates the promise.

It doesn't do anything where luck is concerned. If it did we would all be so lucky.
