Alien Wares are the competitors. Although mainly used for GAMING these machines can ROCK at rendering and graphics processing. I used one to render a small 1 hour animation which took about 5 hours where it took 19 hours on a Core Duo Machine ( 2.66)(4 GB RAM) (7800 512 MB)

It depends on the Mac G5 - there are several models with different speed processors, different amounts of memory, etc.

But the best PC for video applications would use a Core 2 Duo CPU (preferably the X6800, the high-end one), 2GB (maybe even 4GB) of DDR2-1066 memory and at least an nVidia 6600 video card for best performance.
