History of Astrology:
The Babylonians are generally credited with the birth of astrology. Their astrological charts enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and certain celestial events. So, in the beginning and for more than 2,000 years, astrology and astronomy were the same science.
Babylonian astrology was introduced to the Greeks early in the 4th century B.C. and, through the studies of Plato, Aristotle, and others, astrology came to be highly regarded as a science. It was soon embraced by the Romans (the Roman names for the zodiacal signs are still used today) and the Arabs and later spread throughout the entire world.
While earliest astrology was used to bring a sense of order out of apparent chaos, it was soon utilized to predict weather patterns, primarily for agricultural purposes. It was eventually broadened to include forecasts of natural disasters and war and other events in the course of human affairs. Amassing successes in these fields, it was a natural progression for astrology to be used as counsel for kings and emperors and, in time, for all of us.

Newspaper Horoscopes:
No, they are not accurate because they are not individualized using your date, place and exact time of birth.
They are interpreted using "solar charts" and current transits of the planets, current aspects between the transiting planets with a lot of creativity thrown in for the interpretation.
The horoscopes in the newspapers and online are actually based on your Ascendant, the sign on the first house cusp, not your Sun sign, which is one of the reasons why they are inaccurate. The other thing to note is that they are not personalized to your date, place and time of birth. The majority of the readers out there do not know their Ascendant sign, so they are told to read their horoscope for their Sun sign, which is incorrect. You should actually be reading for your Ascendant sign.
This is how solar charts work:
Aries on the first house, Taurus on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for an Aries Ascendant.
Taurus on the first house, Gemini on the 2nd house amd so on through the 12 houses for a Taurus Ascendant.
Gemini on the first house, Cancer on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Gemini Ascendant.
Cancer on the first house, Leo on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Cancer Ascendant.
Leo on the first house, Virgo on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Leo Ascendant.
And so on throughout all 12 sign of the zodiac.
Now throw in the planets in signs, planets in houses and their aspects and interpret the charts on a daily basis.
Bingo, you have a horoscope for online and in newspapers.

Solar: The position of the Sun is taken as the first house cusp and each house cusp is thirty degrees farther along in the zodiac. Note that in this house system neither the Ascendant nor the Midheaven are necessarily house cusps. This system is commonly used when the Ascendant and Midheaven are not known. It is therefore commonly used in newspaper astrology where a horoscope is being produced for everyone of a certain Sun-sign.

Newspaper horoscopes are no good.
Astrology was first given to humanity by one of the 200 watchers who later became known as fallen angels, who fathered the race of giant people called the Nephelim. It is one of the secrets of heaven. Basically it is a map of time
Astrology works, but it takes years to master it. Maybe I should say it takes lots of experience and study to master it. Also, it is not a good substitute for common sense, and experience in relationships with people. Karma exists. God has given us freedom of choice in our lives. This means Astrology only shows directions we can take in our lives, not absolutes. We pick the paths we take, astrology only gives us clues as to our possibilities.
